As demand for phone apps grow Google is now claiming that it has passed the 200,000 Android Apps mark as Apple soars to over 300,000. Microsoft is still struggling with only 5,000 apps for their Windows Phone 7 devices amid claims that their Marketplace can be easily hacked.
As demand for phone apps grow Google is now claiming that it has passed the 200,000 Android Apps mark as Apple soars to over 300,000. Microsoft is still struggling with only 5,000 apps for their Windows Phone 7 devices amid claims that their Marketplace can be easily hacked.
Visitors to the Android MarketPlace store now get a new layout and 100,000- more applications than they did six months ago.
Windows Phone 7 which is struggling to attract consumers to their operating system only has 5,000 apps for consumers with a lot of these being Microsoft developed programs which users have to pay for.
Another problem for Microsoft is that the Windows Phone Marketplace can be cracked with hackers posting a recent proof-of-concept video illustrating how easy it is to crack.
“A ‘white hat’ developer has provided WPCentral with a proof-of-concept program that can successfully pull any application from the Marketplace, remove the security and deploy to an unlocked Windows Phone with literally a push of a button,” Windows Phone Central’s Daniel Rubino wrote in a Dec. 29 posting. “Neither the app nor the methodology is public, and it will not be released (please don’t ask). It is important to note that this was all done within six hours by one developer.”
The four-minute proof-of-concept video shows the program pulling live data from the Marketplace in response to typing in a keyword (such as “Movies”), downloading a fully cracked app, and then installing it on a device via a XAP Installer. Any app can supposedly be downloaded and installed.
