As TV sales fall flat Wi-Fi gear is in big demand driven in part by the release of the Apple iPad new tablets and Smartphones say researchers.New GFK research shows that sales of Wi Fi gear have risen in Australia by over 12% spurred by 802.11n deployments and a jump in Wi-Fi configured gear such as receivers, and Wi Fi enabled TV’s.According to Infonetics, an international communications market research and consulting firm worldwide, WLAN revenues grew 14% from quarter to quarter, reaching $680 million, and by 12% compared to the same quarter one year ago. The firm estimates the overall WLAN market will grow by 17% in 2010 compared to 2009 when fourth quarter results are finally reported.
Sales of single mode Wi-Fi phones, intended for use only with a Wi-Fi connection, jumped 20% quarter to quarter, topping 100,000 units.
Shipments of 802.11n access points were up 5% over the previous quarter and 16% from one year ago, according to Infonetics. This category now accounts for 44% of all access point shipments, and is expected to continue to increase strongly in 2011.
Cisco reclaimed the lion’s share of the global Wi-Fi market, rising 4% over the prior quarter to 51% worldwide.
