Telstra has finally delivered Google’s Android 2.2 operating system (codenamed Froyo) for their HTC Desire phone which is set to go into direct competition with the HTC Desire HD on the Vodafone network. The upgrade was made available late on Saturday night.
The upgrade is good news for Telstra who are now in direct competition with Vodafone who will this week start selling the all new HTC Desire HD on a $59 a month plan.
The 92MB update adds several performance updates and features including 720p video recording plus the ability to use the Desire as a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also allows users to easily transfer applications between phones and to external storage devices.
Also included is a new calculator, FM radio and market widget.
Telstra admits that it has taken four months for the Android 2.2 update to reach the Desire, saying that it was at the mercy of not just it’s own testing but also Google and HTC with Anthony Petts, HTC’s Sales & Marketing Manager, admitting at the HTC Desire HD launch that HTC was responsible for the lion’s share of the blame due to “unforseen delays in its testing schedule”.
The update can be done either via 3G or Wi-Fi.
