After losing the gaming console war to the Nintendo Wii Sony is about to get beaten again up in the handheld market with the new Nintendo DSI which goes on sale today for $269.00 up against the Sony PSP which sells for $335.
Already Sony executives are feeling the pressure with Sony Computer Entertainment executive John Koller, the SCEA director of hardware marketing claiming “If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the “kids” market that they’ve always engaged, there isn’t much new with the DSi to support that”.
The remark has already upset Nintendo DSi fans and analysts who track the market.

Owen Good wrote on gaming site KotaKu “Sony sounds a little like John Lovitz’ impersonation of Michael Dukakis in the 1988 election campaign. “I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy.”
In Australia Nintendo who have 78% of the handheld gaming market according to GFK data and 62% of the console market is also set to roll out new games and accessories over coming months in a move that gaming analysts will help them grow their share of the older audience market even further.
It’s also been revealed that more 33-year-old women own Nintendo DS than 13-year-old boys and in Australia the Company is also using Olivia Newton John and her daughter to market the device to an older audience of consumers in a move which Nintendo Marketing Director Greg Atherton has said will help Nintendo grow the appeal of the device.
Sony who after three years of marketing the Sony PSP has only managed to capture 25% market share up against Nintendo is now claiming that significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi.
Atherton said “We have captured 78% of the handheld market according GFK data and the new device which has wireless capability and a camera as well as photo editing capability we believe will appeal to not only an older audience but consumer who want access to our extensive gaming and other business titles for the DSi”.
In both the handheld market and the gaming console market where Nintendo have 62% of the local market and 54% of the global console market Sony is being beaten up by Nintendo monthly with sales of the PS3 falling Vs increased sales for the Nintendo Wii say analysts.
Also in the console market where the Nintendo Wii sells for $399 Vs the Sony PS3 Playstation console which retails for $699 Nintendo is making a profit on every Nintendo Wii sold while Sony is making massive losses on their ageing console.
Later this month it is expected that Sony who have never made a profit from their Playstation consoles will announce that losses for the Sony Computer Entertainment Division have blown out to over $3 billion dollars.
