A study claims to show that brain games such as those you can get for the Nintendo DS, are no better for solving problems than the pen and paper of years gone by.The study, out of the University of Rennes in France, used a relatively small control group of 67 children aged 10. They were split into four groups – one that went to school as normal, another that used pencils and paper to solve problems, while the remaining two groups played Nintendo memory games.
At the end of the seven week trial, the kids who had played the memory game showed an improvement of 16 percent, while those using the traditional method showed a 33 percent increase in memory.
While the study can hardly be called conclusive, it does show that better technology doesn’t necessarily equate to better memory.
