Samsung Gets Thinnest LCD Crown

First it was Sharp, then Sony, then Philips, now Samsung has released what it claims to be the thinnest LCD in the world at a recent media even in Korea.

At just 7.9 millimetres thick, the prototype 40-inch unit takes over from Philips, whose 8 millimetre unit was shown at the IFA exhibition in Germany in August.

Both prototypes gained some thinness by having the tuner and some other electronics separated into a box that’s intended to sit alongside the screen. Samsung has not announced whether they intend to mass produce the unit.

Samsung was also showing a prototype 52-inch LCD that is 9.9mm thin, which equals  the thinness of Sony’s ZX1, which is the thinnest LCD television yet to be announced as an actual product.
