Weezer go out on a limb here with an assortment of songs that steer away from their traditional indie roots. Don’t get me wrong, they are still on the left side of the tracks, but it’s a real mish mash of genres and sounds – they’re almost breaking out of their skins.

With Rick Rubin at the mixing desk, Rivers Cuomo and co have decided to break the shackles and try a little experimentation – sometimes it works, sometimes not. There’s a little rap, synthesisers, even a drum machine, with the vocals being spread around.
First single Pork and Beans spent quite a few weeks in the charts, but as it is as close as they get to previous efforts it is easy to see why. It’s when you get into the nitty gritty with songs like The Greatest Man That Ever Lived, Dreamin and Automatic that you realise this album isn’t like the others. If you are a true-blue Weezer fan, this album will take getting used to, for the rest of us, it’s an interesting ride.
