Australian Company Invents Power Saving Breakthrough

Adelaide-based Ember Technologies has developed a globally applicable technology that can selectively turn off idle electrical devices, both in the home and in businesses, which are in idle or standby mode. Standby power represents roughly 10 per cent of the power used in Australian homes.

The power-saving breakthrough from Ember Technologies involves an innovative blend of embedded adaptive intelligence technology and smart electronics.
It is ideally suited for all standard audio-visual systems and computer applications within the home and office environments. Most importantly, it requires no change in consumer behaviour – Ember does it all automatically.

According to the company, the benefits include:

    *

Power savings of as much as $120 a year per application
    *

Longer equipment life through full powering down of devices
    *

Reduced fire risk by removing standby power and protection from power fluctuations
    *

Reduced CO2 emissions by reducing and in most cases eliminating standby power.

Ember Technologies CEO Domenico Gelonese said the company’s breakthrough had the capacity to deliver substantial monetary and environmental benefits nationally. “Our technology addresses the standby power that is needlessly consumed in our homes and offices,” he said.

“In Australia alone, this wasteful power consumption is worth in the order of $1 billion each year and equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions produced by around 1.5 million cars,” he said.

“Our technology is able to address all forms of power wastage, from idle computer peripheral devices to LCD and plasma television screens and home sound systems. It’s like unplugging the idle device from the power socket. We have spent three years perfecting this technology in order to deliver a consumer-friendly solution that tackles our ever-increasing levels of power usage. Saving power in the home and office is about to become a whole lot easier.”

The first application of this technology will be through a smart power board, suitable for both the PC environment and home audio-visual systems. Ember Technologies is well underway to launching its innovative technology in the Australian market during the first quarter of next year. It will then launch the technology internationally through a number of exciting product applications.
