Motorola To Bring Music Downloads To Phones

Motorola will soon be able to offer a music download service to its customers, with the acquisition of Asia’s largest online and mobile music company, Soundbuzz.

The move comes as the company aims to ramp up its efforts in the mobile music space.

Motorola’s Motomusic offering has been delivering mobile music files to Motorola customers in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong for two years, now with this acquisition the company will be able to expand this service to Australia, China, India, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.

Soundbuzz currently offers more than 750,000 tracks for download onto portable music players, mobile phones or PCs, according to the company.

Sound buzz in Asia supplies music content and technology infrastructure to Optus Zoo, BigPond Music, SingTel, Hutchison 3, Sony BMG, Telstra and Creative Technology.

According to Motorola, the acquisition will strengthen its stake in the mobile music market considerably – especially in Asia where consumers purchase over 90 per cent of their music via mobile channels.

Headquartered in Singapore, Soundbuzz has access to one of the most extensive music libraries in the Asia-Pacific region, through licenses from Sony BMG, EMI, Warner Music International and Universal Music Group, as well as over 45 independent record labels in Asia, the U.S. and Europe.

A Motorola spokesperson said the company is still working through the details, and is not able to advise as yet when the download service will become available. Stay tuned for more details.
