Aussies’ Love Affair With Video Calling

Video calling is becoming more popular with a record number of video calls made to family and friends over the Christmas period.

Telecommunications provider Telstra has released its figures that show there were 65 per cent more video calls made on mobile phones using the Telstra Next G network on Christmas day compared with Christmas 2006.

“Australians are now using video calling on Telstra’s Next G network in record numbers,” said Telstra spokesperson, Peter Taylor.

According to Taylor, Australians are early adopters when it comes to communication technology.

“Australians have always been early adopters of new communication technology as it helps overcome the tyranny of distance and brings family and friends closer together. Parents in particular are big users of video calling as it helps them keep in touch with children and loved ones when working late or travelling,” he said.

Video calling could become more popular again this year with Telstra switching its CDMA users to the new Next G system, which offers faster speeds and supports more content, making video calling more accessible.

“With less than 20 days to go before the planned closure of the old CDMA network, we expect more people will move across to a Telstra Next G service and start using video calling for the first time,” Taylor said.
