LG Electronics has defended its position in the laundry market after being unlucky enough to receive a ‘Shonky Award’ from Choice magazine this year following independent tests by the media outlet which suggested LG’s Combined Steam Washer/Dryer WD-1248RD wasted water.
According to Choice, LG’s washer/dryer guzzled 74L of water to provide steam to dry 5kg of washing, despite being marketed as ‘green’.
While Choice admitted that the washer part of the machine performed impressively, using only 107L of water for a 9kg load, which compares well with other machines, it also recognised that the government’s water efficiency labelling system doesn’t take into account a condenser dryer’s water consumption.
“Choice wants washer/dryer labels to show total water use,” said the magazine.
LG has defended its WD-1248RD washer/dryer, saying it qualifies for the 4-star water efficiency rating according to the testing standards for water efficiency outlines by the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO).
“Currently there are no testing standards outlined by the AGO to assess water usage in the dry cycle,” said LG.
“LG Electronics Australia is very focused on energy conservation and water usage so takes this matter seriously as it wants to ensure all of its products in the Australian market are high quality, efficient and compliant.”
