CD Review: Mark Ronson Version

What do Radiohead, Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse have in common? Mark Ronson of course. British DJ / producer / artist Ronson covers, features or remixes them all in his second album Version.

Mark Ronson who is well known also for signing contemporary soul/R&B singer Amy Winehouse to his label, has produced a very interestingly eclectic album in Version.

After listening to and reviewing Winehouse’s Back to Black last week, we can’t help but have that feeling that the songs on Mark Ronson’s album are similarly hit and miss. When they’re good – they are simply awesome.

And one such awesome track is the funkified version of Radiohead’s Just. Listening and loving the original track, we always had a feeling that the riff had some real funk flavours to it, and Ronson has brought them out to a tee in this song.

Amy Winehouse features on this album too with a version of The Zutons’ Valerie – and it’s a killer track, well produced, excellent vocals and rhythm. Also of note is a version of Britney Spears’ toxic – it is strangely cool and surprisingly likable.

Other songs offer the promise of funk – but then lose some of it with too much layering in the production – but hey: hats off to Ronson for re-imagining and re-creating some really cool tracks in a funky new way.
