Apple is bringing YouTube content direct to your Apple TV with the release of a new software update for the Apple TV box. The company has also launched a new build-to-order version of Apple TV which will feature a 160GB hard drive.
The software update, which will be released in mid-June, will allow Apple TV to wirelessly stream videos directly from the Google-owned YouTube to play on your big screen TV. You will be able to browse YouTube videos using the Apple TV interface and remote – a YouTube item will appear on the Apple TV menu.
“This is the first time users can easily browse, find and watch YouTube videos right from their living room couch, and it’s really, really fun,” Apple CEO, Steve Jobs.
Apple says thousands of the most current and popular YouTube videos will be available on Apple TV at launch in mid-June, with YouTube adding thousands more each week until the full YouTube catalogue is available this spring.
YouTube members can also log-in to their YouTube accounts on Apple TV to view and save favourite videos.
The new Apple TV build-to-order option with 160GB hard drive will provide four times the storage option for up to 200 hours of video, Apple says.
Apple TV connects to a range of TVs and home theatre systems and comes standard with HDMI, component video, analogue and optical audio ports. In combination with a broadband connection and AirPort 802.11n Wi-Fi, it can auto-sync content from one computer, or stream content from up to five computers to your TV wirelessly.
RRP: Apple TV- $449 or with 160GB hard drive – $579
