Microsoft has announced the successor to its popular free email account service MSN Hotmail has officially launched globally in 36 languages.
Windows Live Hotmail promises “a safer, more powerful and productive experience” than previous versions. Windows Live also offers features and looks similar to Microsoft’s Outlook email program – though you have the option of viewing it in the familiar Hotmail style also.
In terms of safety, Microsoft says it has improved spam protection and built in a safety bar, to allow you to identify known senders and potentially fraudulent ones.
Inbox storage size begins at 2GB, though Microsoft says it will look to increase that in future as needs grow.
Available later this month is the new Office Outlook Connector beta, which will enable you to view and manage your Live Hotmail account from Outlook for free, with full contact, email and email folder synchronisation.
In the coming weeks, Microsoft will also introduce an additional e-mail client option for Windows Live Hotmail with the release of Windows Live Mail beta, a free consumer e-mail client available via download that will be a successor to Outlook Express and Windows Mail on Windows Vista
You can sign up for a Live Hotmail account from www.hotmail.com or update your existing Hotmail account to Live by logging in to your account and clicking on the green Join Windows Live Hotmail button.
