Sony Gaming Revenues Slump As New Attack Hits PSN Network

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia who is well known for their “profit gouging” has reported an $8M slump in revenue as in store gaming sales take a hit in favour of online downloads. Despite this the Company has managed to lift profits. from $3.8M in 2010 to $4.6M in 2011.

Overall revenues for the Australian operation fell from $241M to $233 Million during the period ending March 2011.

In an effort to expand their revenues SCE Australia is now attempting to sell PlayStation-branded 3D display monitors with the launch of a new 24-inch 3D screen which will go on sale in Australian from November 3. The PlayStation 3 has a library of over 100 games that support stereoscopic 3D.

The move comes as consumers move to gaming on tablets and smartphones.

The new 24″ display will be sold exclusive to Harvey Norman.

The latest SCE, financial results does not include the loss of revenue or profits from the month long closure of the Sony Playstation network earlier this year following a major security breach which allowed hackers to steal confidential information from the Sony network.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia’s managing director Michael Ephraim is not commenting about his latest financial results which have been helped by the launch in 2010 of a new Sony Playstation gaming console which was cheaper for the Company to produce than prior models.

Answering questions about his new monitor he said “We think the technology is pretty exciting for core gamers. To be able to play two gamers on one screen, and 3D gaming, is certainly appealing.”

Ephraim is not certain whether there is a market for the screen in Australia which is expensive when compared with other 24″ monitors.

Overnight Sony Computer Entertainment was again is in the spotlight after their network was targeted in another attack that impacted 93,000 user accounts.

“These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources,” commented Sony’s CISO, Philip Reitinger.

Accounts that were successfully matched in the attack have been suspended. For customers locked out of their accounts, Sony is communicating with them in order to complete a reset and verification process, a company spokesperson said. The attack started last Friday and continued until the early hours of Monday morning.
