New Qualcomm’s Mobile Processors Attack ARM With Playstation-Like Performance

Qualcomm reveals thier new range of processors will have more processing power than rival ARM, with their to-be-released top of the range putting current console graphic power into mobile phones.

Qualcomm’s next generation of smartphone and tablet processor architecture has been exposed on several web sites,  the leak reveals three next generation processors.

Electronista said that  the detailed roadmap for Qualcomm’s future Krait-era Snapdragons explains much of the mobile chip makers future path.

Codenamed Krait, the architecture is a new Qualcomm design from the ground up and has the potential to run speeds up to 2.5GHz.

The MSM8930 is the company’s introductory model and has a 1.2 GHz single core processor that integrates modem capability and adds an Adreno 305 GPU. On their low end, the GPU will enable smooth video playback of a 3D 12 megapixel camera at 1080p resolution.

Current high end phones, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S2 shoot in 1080p but it is recommended downgrading picture quality on the device to 720p achieve smooth video playback.

Qualcomm’s midrange processor is the MSM8960, which offers dual core processing power at 1.7GHz. With its superior Adreno 225 Video GPU it’ll produce the same video recording capabilities of the low-range MSM8930, but at a higher 20 megapixels.

The MSM8960 should be released late 2011 and will set the new benchmark for high end devices, and Qualcomm claim that this offering will be 150% faster than its rival ARM’s current processors.

The MSM8974 sets up the company in the long term, offering quad core capabilities in mobile devices at speeds up to 2.5GHz. Topping Qualcomm’s range, this processor will run an Adreno 320 Graphics core, which will produce 3D 1080p video at 30 megapixels, with an upped 60fps.

Although the MSM8974 won’t be released until 2012-2013, it will incorporate current gaming console power into mobile devices. ARM have already claimed their rival processor will capable of current gaming console graphics, but the recipe for success in this race depends on many, many factors.

Taking into consideration that the PS3 and Xbox 360 console relies on mains power, these super processors will have to be very efficient if they’re to power high end smartphones that can do much more than just game.
