Panasonic Planning Smarter TVs With New Dual Core Processor

Panasonic is aiming to leap ahead of the game with new chip technology from ARM embedded into its Smart TVs.

Based around a 1.4GHz dual core Cortex-A9 design, which will be the industry’s fastest for TVs, the UniPhier family of processor will combine Panasonic’s high quality audio visual technology used in HDTVs and Blu-ray players with the high speed CPU on a single chip.

Importantly it will also reduce power consumption by around 40 percent when compared with the current generation chips, bringing huge energy savings to the household electricity bill, while loading Internet TV programmes much faster.

Engadget says the new chips can handle two HDTV streams plus internet content and smart TV apps all at once, and is following Toshiba’s cell-based CEVO TV processors which also brings multiple cores and high speed memory to its units.

Panasonic’s new chip also includes high performance 3D graphics capability and will intensify the battleground for Smart TV vendors.

Manufacturers are now moving towards a low-power, high performance model and the ability to stream internet video quickly. There may also be moves to incorporate built-in games on Smart TVs, according to UK-based website,Thinq.
