Symantec Management Hide Behind PR Minders After Sacking OZ Staff

Symantec, are all over journalists when they want a free PR ride, they even issue research study after research study telling us how good their local software is, but when it comes to explaining why they are closing down their Australian development operations with the sacking of several staff, Symantec management have chosen to duck for cover as they hide behind their PR minders.

Yesterday Symantec who claim that they are doing “brilliantly well” in Australia shocked its Australian staff with news that it will close development and product engineering operations in Australia, and make a so-far unknown number of workers redundant.

Under orders from its US headquarters, Symantec Australia is expected to outsource some its software engineering development work to India and other low-cost centres.

Symantec executives were not available to talk to local media on the matter yesterday. But the company’s PR agency – in response to queries – issued a statement said to be attributable to “a Symantec spokesperson”.

It said in part that: “At a global level, Symantec is consolidating a small number of positions in certain development and product engineering roles to improve productivity and drive operational efficiencies, and as part of this we are making some redundancies within one of our North Sydney engineering teams.”

The statement stressed that the company would not close either of its two Sydney offices: one in Kent Street in the CBD, and another in North Sydney. It also said an R&D team would be maintained in North Sydney.

It added: “We are in consultation with the affected staff whose roles may be impacted by this decision and are exploring the viability of alternative employment options within the organisation.”
