Microsoft has proved that they have an edge over Sony after they unveiled a broad array of games and entertainment services that use its Kinect motion-sensing device including a new Star Wars game.At the games industry’s annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) conference, Microsoft launched a new Star Wars game for its Xbox 360 system using the Kinect motion-sensing facility to let players engage in light-sabre battles.
Microsoft has sold 10 million Kinect units since the launch late last year. The device, which hooks up to an Xbox console, lets gamers control movements on-screen with gestures and voice commands.
This year’s E3 conference, running June 7-9, comes as the industry tries to cope with the rapid growth of online and mobile gaming. It is also expected to feature comeback attempts from Sony and Nintendo.
In a star-studded presentation at a Los Angeles sports arena on the eve of the E3 games show – and perhaps hoping to draw a line under the series of hacking incidents that forced it to shut down its PlayStation video games network for almost a month – Sony announced a new name for a forthcoming new version of its handheld PlayStation Portable device range. The new gadget – due to hit the market late this year – is to be known as the PlayStation Vita, executives said.
Previously known as the NGP, the Vita will cost US$249 for a Wi-Fi-only model and $299 for a 3G version. It will have two joysticks, a multi-touch 5-inch OLED screen, front and rear touchpads, and front and rear cameras for augmented reality.
