Apple Turn To Samsung For Flexible OLED Display

Sony was the first to demonstate an OLED smartphone screen that bends but it will be Samsung that delivers the first commercial OLED display device with Apple tipped to be exploring the concept of a future OLED flexible iPhone and TV remote.

Yesterday Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun revealed that the company has received “huge” orders from electronics makers for flexible OLED displays. Kwon said that Samsung will be mass-producing flexible OLED displays, with about a million expected to be shipped by the end of the year.

Samsung has not denied that Apple is one of their customers looking to get access to supply of the flexible OLED display however it is uncertain as to what  Apple will use the technology for, some say it could be a TV remote that delivers information to a small handheld OLED screen.

Samsung has been showing off its flexible OLED display technology during the past 12 months, but it was Sony who showed off the technology, but despite their rush to show off their technology it appears that the Company is short of funds to invest in production of either flexible OLED display screens or Sony OLED TV’s.

Samsung has branded their displays “Yuom,” and is now ramping up commercial production. Flexible display smartphone concepts have already been shown off by researchers in Canada, as well. Integration of flexible display technology with current smartphone technology could lead to big changes in user interactions, as well as phone form factors, enabling wearable smartphones and other unimagined possibilities.
