Motorola, who has struggled to get sales for their Xoom tablet up against the highly popular iPad, is having a second crack at trying to get consumers to buy their Android device with the launch today of a pricey $720 Xoom 2.In an effort to bolster attention for the device the Company has chosen to selectively leak information to morning newspapers as opposed to issuing a press release to trade and specialist media.
At this stage Motorola is not saying whether the new device will have Android 4.0 despite the device being made by a Company now owned by Google.
The Xoom 2 has a scratch-resistant screen and splash-proof body which is why consumers are being asked to pay up to $200 more than the new Toshiba tablet which is the lightest and thinnest android tablet in the world today.
Motorola product marketing manager Sean Pyper said the second Xoom was a major upgrade on the company’s first effort launched in May last year.
“The Xoom 2 is the highest performing 10.1-inch tablet on the market right now with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and that makes it faster that some of the leading tablets,” he said.
Most consumers are expected to wait for the March 7th launch of the new Apple iPad say analysts.
