Guts Of New iPad 3 Revealed Not What Was Expected

The guts of the new iPad 3 have been revealed and it’s not what many expected.

An apparent discovery yesterday has revealed that the new motherboard of the iPad 3 which is scheduled to be released on March 7th has an A5X, not an A6, processor as tipped.

The discovery also reveals two 16GB Hynix flash memory chips for storage.

A date code on the motherboard reveals that it was manufactured in November 14-20 which indicates that iPad 3 production is well advanced.

Image Electronista

Electronista said that the new processor could be a quad-core version of the existing ARM Cortex-A9 architecture in the A5, making it more of a parallel to (if likely faster than) NVIDIA’s Tegra 3. Alternately, though less likely, it could still be dual-core and use either a higher clock speed on a new 28-nanometer process or the new ARM Cortex-A15 architecture that Samsung is using in the Exynos 5250.

Graphics will likely get a boost regardless of the underlying processor given the likely 2048×1536 display. Most 2011-era mobile graphics couldn’t handle that resolution or would be too slow. As such, it’s probable that the next iPad will use either a higher-clocked version of the iPad 2’s PowerVR SGX543MP2 dual-core video or its quad-core relative, the SGX543MP4 seen in the PS Vita.

The new Apple A5X would give Apple an advantage by shipping months ahead of a future Samsung Galaxy Tab that would have to wait until late in the spring at best to use an Exynos 5250.

There is also rumours that new Apple tablet could have an eight-megapixel camera. Taiwan’s Apple Daily showed both a conspicuously larger rear lens recently claiming that it was an eight-megapixel camera.

The lone full shot of the purported iPad 3 case back showed a possibly steeper taper than on the iPad 2, although whether this was to minimize a slightly thicker body or other factors wasn’t apparent. Much of everything else, down to the volume rocker and single speaker, was virtually identical.

Other publications have referred to multi-carrier LTE support and have gotten into more detail of the Retina Display screen, which should be a 2048×1536 panel in the same 9.7-inch size.
