Happy Internet Day… But CyberThreats Loom

Stay safe online – that’s the warning from Broadband minister, as virus, hackers and insecure websites increase rapidly.

Today is world Safer Internet Day 2012 and to mark the occasion the government has released Easy Guide to Socialising Online as more Australians than ever log on to Facebook, Twitter and other online forums.

The guide lists 26 social networking sites and their cybersafety tools includingTumblr,Skype, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and Myspace as well as search engines like Google and Yahoo!7 and online games consoles Xbox, Wii and Nintendo 3DS.

It also features general tips to help stay safe when using any social media.

The government has also created a downloadable Cyber Safety Help Button to offer counselling, reporting and education to assist young people deal with online risks including cyberbullying, unwanted contact, scams, and offensive or inappropriate material.

Looking out for your family and friends is an important part of keeping everyone safe online, says Minister for Broadband, Communications, Senator Stephen Conroy.

Education sessions will take place around Australia kicking off in Tasmania and overseas to remind people to help each other stay safe online as part of the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Cybersmart Program.

 

“I encourage everyone to help your friends and family stay cybersafe,” says the minister.

“No matter your age or technical ability, everyone has a part to play and an experience to share.”
