Five Smartphone Speed Shootout Vs New 4G HTC Velocity

A shootout between some of the latest model phones Vs the new 4g HTC Velocity has thrown up some interesting results. At the recent Telstra launch of the new HTC 4G Velocity, Telstra executives said that the new phone was configured to operate on the 3G dual channel with HSPA+ connectivity.

So we decided to test several phones including the Apple iPhone 4S, the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung, the HTC Sensation with Beats Audio technology and the Samsung Galaxy S2, as well as the new HTC 4G Velocity.

The test took place on a Saturday afternoon in Mosman NSW which is when Telstra claims less people are using their network compared to a normal work day.

When it came to outright download speeds the winner was the HTC 4G Velocity that achieved download speeds of 13605kbps. The second fastest 3G phone was the Motorola Razr which achieved download speeds of 6387kbps; this was followed by the Samsung Google Nexus with a download speed of 4780kbps.

Some of the models we tested.

Then came the Apple iPhone 4S with a download speed of 4302kbps followed by the HTC Sensation which was released on the Vodafone network with the new Beats Audio technology. This device achieved a download speed of 3516kbps.

Surprisingly the model that came last in our test was the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Download speeds achieved by model

When it came to upload speeds it was the Samsung Galaxy S2 that was the fastest with an upload speed of 2992kbps, the second fastest for upload speeds was the Motorola Razr with a speed of 2968kbps.

This was followed by the 4G HTC Velocity which could only manage an upload speed of 2055kbps.

The Samsung Google Nexus came in next with 1046kbps followed by the HTC Sensation at 937kbps.
Last in the upload shootout was the Apple iPhone 4S.

The software we used to test the phones was Speed Test which we downloaded from the Android Market and the Apple App store.

All phones were set to the Optus Sydney server which was 6 kilometres away from where the tests took place.
We also tested on the Internode Sydney servers where we got similar results.
