Gerry Harvey Blows Fire Over Hoax

A hoax email, claiming Harvey Norman would replace furniture and flooring from native forests, has Gerry Harvey fuming. The incriminating press release, sent under the Harvey Norman name to media yesterday indicated the retailer would replace furniture and flooring from native forests with plantation grown items by the end of the year.
The fake letter was signed by signed by Benjamin South. And Gerry Harvey and Co are now thinking of suing the perpetrators of the letter and are said to be taking lawyers advice, reports The Mercury.

“We don’t tolerate things that are not right,” said Harvey Norman director John Slack-Smith, adding his boss Gerry Harvey was fuming over the incident.

Harvey Norman has been under fire for the destruction of forests in Australia and has been besieged by protest movements at Sydney Opera House, who unfurled banner on the roof of the iconic building, stating: “No Harvey No! Stop selling Aussie forest destruction.”

Harvey’s foresting antics even attracted the ire of Greenie groups as far flung as Ontario, Canada, Auckland and even spread to Europe.

Timber manufacturer SmithBritton Timbers managing director Glenn Britton said the perpetrators did was “wrong” and not acknowledge Harvey’s support of sustainable managed blackwood and Tasmanian oak.

GetUp, one of the anti forester campaigners, spokesperson Paul Mackay, said his organisation had nothing to do with the fake letter. However, he added he had hoped the letter was for real.
