Will Foxtel Get Premier League Online Apps Deal?

As Soccer takes off in Australia with A League games now attracting bigger crowds than NRL, Foxtel and Telstra may be in a position to score a major goal after News Ltd overnight snared the online and app-based rights to show highlights from the 2013 UK Premier League season.According to Foxtel, Premier League games (which are shown exclusively on Foxtel) attract “big” audiences in Australia. News Ltd own 50% of Foxtel.

A BBC executive told SmartHouse at CES that their BBC Sport and their Premier League coverage “attracted millions of hits from Australian PC, smartphone and tablet owners, especially on a Sunday morning”.

The $30M  deal will see the UK  Sun and The Times newspapers get exclusive rights to screen goals and highlight videos through their websites and mobile apps.

The deal entitles the papers to show eight 30-second videos from each game, as they happen, except for those games kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon.

CNet said the deal replaces the one currently held by the ESPN Goals which brought free highlights as the action happened, and the agreement with Yahoo that brought free highlights packages to its website.

BBC’s Match of the Day show has retained its rights to show terrestrial highlights shows.
