Fast mobile access in Australia is set for rapid expansion with nearly half of all Down Under mobile connections to go via 4G LTE by mid-2016, according to research from Sydney-based technology analyst firm Telsyte.
The number of connected LTE 4G mobile devices in Australia will grow17-fold, from around 1 million this year to more than 17 million services in operation by the end of 2016, Telsyte says. This will enable a new era of high-speed, data-intensive mobile applications for streaming music, video communications and collaboration, it predicts.
By mid 2016 46 percent of mobile connections will be 4G and in some cases will provide an alternative to fixed-line broadband, according to Telsyte’s Australian Mobile Services Market Study 2012-2016.
The report analyses and forecasts movements in the mobile services market, with updates on carriers’ strategies, MVNO performance, and end-user trends.
Research director Foad Fadaghi said Telsyte had increased its forecast for 4G adoption in Australia due to a number of significant market changes. “Our latest research indicates a combination of new handsets, strong carrier deployment of 4G services, and mobile broadband as an alternative to fixed-line services, is resulting in faster than initially expected uptake of 4G,” Fadaghi said.
“More than 20 LTE-enabled devices will be available through carriers by the end of this year.”
Telsyte estimates by end of 2016, more than 80 per cent of smartphones sold will be capable of utilising Australia’s 4G networks.
With current spectrum shortages, however, much may depend on the coming auction of spectrum in the 700MHz and 2.5GHz bands – especially the former.
