Microsoft is breathing a sigh of relief after Sales of Windows 7 significantly outstripped those of Windows Vista in its first week on sale according to new research.
ccording to NPD sales of Windows 7 were 234 percent higher than those of Vista, with dollar sales 82 percent higher. The new software was released Oct. 22.
“Microsoft’s program of early low cost pre sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals, helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful”, Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD, said.
“In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles.” He added.
The Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade was the highest-selling product, followed by the Pro upgrade and the the Home Premium Family Pack 3 User Upgrade, NPD said.
For otherv operating systems Microsoft plans to issue six security bulletins tomorrow (US time) to fix at least 15 serious vulnerabilities that could expose Windows users to malicious attacks.
According to Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday notice, the updates will tackle holes in the Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office productivity suite.
Three of the six bulletins will be rated “critical”. The other three will be rated “important.”
The vulnerabilities affect Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Server 2003 and Server 2008. Code execution holes affecting Microsoft Office will apply to Office XP, Office 2003 and the 2007 Office System.
The bulletin will also include patches for serious holes in Microsoft Excel.
