Australians in 4G coverage areas will be able to surf the web on their phones “up to five times faster” from next Tuesday, 24 January, Tesltra said today.

The 4.5″ HTC Velocity 4G features a 4.5 inch touch screen, a potent 1.5 GHz dual core processor for fast multi-tasking and an 8MP camera and will run on Telstra’s 4G LTE-enabled network – the first live 4G network in Oz.

Velocity is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread, HTC Sense 3.5, and has Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi hotspot, MP3 player and FM radio.

Typical upload speeds on the HTC 4G will range from 1Mbps to 10Mbps – up to three times faster than speeds available on the fastest 3G handsets in Australia.

Using HTC Velocity in 4G areas will enjoy download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps – up to five times faster than speeds available on 3G handsets, the telco confirmed today.

However, superfast 4G coverage is available in Australia’s eight capital cities (within 5km from the GPO) plus more than 80 regional and metropolitan centres (3km from the regional town centre).

Outside these areas, Velocity 4G will switche to the 3G network.

Telstra became the first mobile service provider in Australia to launch 4G LTE mobile services last September and HTC Velocity is now the first ever 4G ready smartphone to go on sale here.
