Samsung’s Quest: Educating Kids Through Questacon

Canberra’s National Science and Technology Centre, Questacon, has announced a new partnership with Samsung, providing products to support technology skills and education programs and helping connect young people with better learning experiences.

Questacon holds a special place in my heart – it was -the- cool science and tech place to visit when I was a child growing up in Canberra, and better still, they sold “Silly Putty”.
Sadly, Questacon no longer sell Silly Putty, although it is easy to make your own, but the many cool activities and learning experiences Questacon offers youngsters has only increased and improved over time.
Now it is set to get even better, with Questacon’s Director, Professor Graham Durant, AM, saying that: “This partnership will enhance skill-building activities for young Australians.
“Samsung technology will be incorporated into mathematics, science and innovation programmes delivered from the Questacon Technology Learning Centre (QTLC) in Canberra.

“The QTLC’s programmes are designed to give young people the skills and confidence to become creators – not just consumers – of technology. Samsung’s contribution shows their commitment to this objective, supporting tomorrow’s scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs,” concluded Mr Durant.

When it comes to specifics, Samsung says it will “provide technology equipment such as tablets, smartphones and smart TVs, which will be used for school and holiday workshops that explore design-thinking and problem-solving challenges.”
Samsung Australia’s Head of Government Relations, Mark Dunn, said: “We are delighted to partner with Questacon which has inspired generations of Australians to become passionate about science and technology.

“Together, Questacon and Samsung want to create innovative learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to help young Australians discover new experiences and learn new skills.
“We look forward to combining Samsung’s technology with Questacon’s passion for learning.”

Professor Durant added that: “We’re thrilled to be able to incorporate Samsung’s high-end technology into our workshops, where students can create, test and refine their ideas using tools and equipment ranging from simple glue guns to 3D printers and laser cutters.”

Samsung’s tablets will be used in Questacon’s popular 3D design workshops, allowing students to gain experience in this new field of manufacturing.
In addition, Samsung smartphones will be used for design, data collection and analysis tasks, using a variety of apps for materials science, engineering, modelling and animation.
