IiNet Copyright Battle Off To Court

Perth-based Internet service provider iiNet and US copyright litigant Dallas Buyers Club are set for a showdown in the Federal Court in February, after iiNet declined to provide personal details of customers who allegedly used BitTorrent to download certain copyrighted content.

The main hearing has been set for February 5 and 6. But an earlier “directions” hearing has been set for December 5, which will determine if iiNet can call a witness to explain how Dallas uses technology from Maverick Eye to identify claimed copyright content.

IiNet has declined to supply details of its clients, saying that they could be used by Dallas to indulge in “speculative invoicing”, a problem said to be quite common among so-called copyright “trolls” in the USA.
