Microsoft Sees Strength In Cloud: Revenue Grows, Profit Slides In Q3

Microsoft grew its revenue in the 2015 third quarter, however has seen net income drop 12 per cent year-on-year.Microsoft posted net income for the quarter of US$4.98 billion (around $6.39 billion), with revenue growing 6.5 per cent year-on-year to US$21.73 billion, up on analysts’ expectations of US$21.1 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella hailed the company’s cloud performance, with commercial cloud revenue growing 106 per cent, driven by Office 365, Azure and Dynamics CRM Online, at an annualised revenue run rate of US$6.3 billion.

“Customers continue to choose Microsoft to transform their business and as a result we saw incredible growth across our cloud services this quarter,” Nadella stated.

“Next week at Build we’re excited to share more about how we’re empowering every individual and organisation on the planet to achieve more with the next generation of our platforms.”

Microsoft’s devices and consumer revenue grew 8 per cent to US$8.95 billion, with Surface revenue of US$713 million up 44 per cent, which Microsoft stated was driven by the Surface Pro 3. Windows OEM Pro revenue declined 19 per cent, with Windows OEM non-pro revenue declining 26 per cent.

“The company beat across the board after a jaw-dropper last quarter,” Bloomberg reported Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets & Co. in New York, as stating.

“Despite PC headwinds, the company is doing a good job stabilising the ship on the Windows front while cloud continues to be a major pillar of strength.”
