Australia’s IP traffic will grow threefold between 2014 and 2019, hitting 1.4 exabytes a month by the end of 2019, according to a Cisco survey.
Wireless transmissions will dominate those numbers, with Wi-Fi tipped to carry 60pc of all the country’s IP traffic by 2019, according to Australian numbers extracted from Cisco’s global Visual Networking Index, published last month.
Cisco tips the average Australian fixed broadband speed will grow 2.4-fold from 2014 to 2019, from 18.3 to 44Mbps. And it says this speed will be fuelling up to 219.6 million networked devices in Australia by the end of the period, up from 115.7 million in 2014 – apparently reflecting the expected growth in the much-ballyhooed Internet of Things.
This means smartphones and PCs will account for a smaller fraction of connected devices in Australia in 2019 (10 and 8pc respectively, versus 18pc apiece in 2014), Cisco estimates.
