Lenovo Introduces New ThinkPads With Intel Xeon Processors

Lenovo has unveiled two new notebooks, the ThinkPad P50 and P70, powered by Intel Xeon E3-1500M v5 processors. The P50 and P70 are the first notebooks to feature the Xeon processors, with Intel having announced last week that it is bringing its E3-1500M v5 product family to notebooks.

Lenovo’s latest additions to its ThinkPad line both feature Nvidia Quadro GPUs for graphics, with the P series also coming with X-Rite Pantone colour calibration. The P50 and P70 feature a new Flex Performance Cooling system, with Lenovo stating a “dual-fan design allows for cooler, quieter and faster performance”.

The P70, designed for high-end professionals, measures in at 17″. It is decked out with 64 GB of DDR4 ECC memory and the ability to handle up to four storage devices and up to a terabyte of SSD storage, employing the latest PCIe technology, which Lenovo states delivers speeds up to five times faster than current SATA technology.

The P70 is additionally equipped with two Intel Thunderbolt 3 ports, and comes with a 4K UHD display or optional FHD touch.

The P50, Lenovo’s “thinnest and lightest full-function mobile workstation yet”, measures in at 15.6″, featuring a UHD 4K display or optional FHD touch. Like the P70, it is equipped with 64 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, while it can handle up to a terabyte of SSD storage, utilising PCIe.

“We are excited to bring Intel Xeon’s legacy of performance, manageability and reliability to mobile workstations,” Navin Shenoy, vice president and general manager, Mobility Client Platforms Group, Intel, commented.

“Now the power of Intel Xeon is in a notebook that can handle the unique compute and graphics intensive needs of engineers and designers.”

Lenovo states the notebooks will be available in the 2015 fourth quarter, with pricing beginning at US$1,599 for the P50 and US$1,999 for the P70.
