Freeview Launches Personal Video Recorder

Freeview is marking the first anniversary of its FreeviewPlus television service with the launch of its first certified personal video recorder. The aerialBox T2200 recorder can be connected to any digital television to access all FreeviewPlus services, enabling viewers to record more than 250 hours via the FreeviewPlus broadband-delivered TV guide.

Launched in September last year, FreeviewPlus employs hybrid TV technology, combining broadband and broadcast TV, offering a range of features, including a seven-day electronic program guide and access to available catch-up services in one place.

Freeview states that early indicators are positive, with penetration and usage accelerating, with Freeview having four of the top five manufacturers certified, representing 83 per cent of all smart TV sales.

FreeviewPlus is available on a range of TVs, including from Hisense, Samsung, Sony, LG, Bauhn and Hitachi.

However Freeview has refused to release numbers on its household penetration as it marks the one year anniversary of its hybrid broadcast broadband TV (HbbTV) service.

The move comes less than three months after the body conceded it was unlikely to hit the 10 per cent penetration target it had set a year ago.

The launch of the aerialBox T2200 comes amid intense competition in the domestic TV market, following this year’s arrival of Netflix along with other paid services such as Stan, with competition building between free and paid services to capture viewer numbers.

“The arrival of the first FreeviewPlus PVR is an exciting development for Australian viewers, giving them even more flexibility and control over the viewing experience with the ability to schedule a single program recording or series,” Freeview CEO Liz Ross commented.

Dish TV’s Nipuul H Patel stated Dish TV “is proud to be the first manufacturer to bring both a FreeviewPlus-certified PVR and set-top box” to the market.

“The dual tuner receiver boasts built-in Wi-Fi and an internal 1TB hard drive, allowing viewers to record two channels while watching a third, or even record a program while watching catch-up TV,” Patel commented.

The aerialBox T2200 is on sale nationally from today at appliance and electronics retailers including Dick Smith and David Jones.
