Speaking at WSJDLive, The Wall Street Journal’s global technology conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated Apple Music has 15 million users, of which 6.5 million are paying subscribers.Having launched on June 30 offering users a three-month free subscription, users having taken advantage of the offer have been coming off the trial period since the end of September, with the focus now falling on how many users sign on to become paying members.
A month after its launch, it was reported that Apple Music had attracted 11 million trial members, with Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president of internet software and services, telling USA Today that 2 million of those members had opted for the family pack.
Australian pricing for an individual membership is $11.99 per month and for the family membership $17.99 per month.
Another consideration when looking at the numbers is that, with Apple Music running an automatic renewal at the end of the trial period, it remains to be seen how many of the 6.5 million paying subscribers forgot to disable the renewal option.
Either way, going by the figures, Apple Music appears to have made a solid start – as would be expected given Apple’s strong launching pad – with it now remaining to be seen how it performs in the long run.
By way of comparison, rival music streaming service Spotify advised in June that it had reached more than 20 million subscribers and more than 75 million active users.
