Aussie Driverless Car Radar System Can ‘See Round Corners’

ADELAIDE – Australian driverless car equipment maker Cohda has launched V2X-Radar, claimed to be a radical new sensor for driverless cars that’s unaffected by rain, snow or fog, and can “see” around corners. Cohda is hoping for major worldwide sales of the kit, as the driverless revolution takes hold on the world’s roads. The new kit was launched at an extraordinary event at
Cohda’s North Adelaide HQ – where the SA Government held a Cabinet meeting in
the Cohda offices. The day later saw ministers briefed on the new gear and
given the opportunity to ride in a V2X-Radar equipped car.

According to Cohda, V2X-Radar is a game-changing 360-degree radar that provides
a new sensor for driverless cars. It can detect buildings, road signs and even
older vehicles not equipped with car-to-car communications.

The system will be demonstrated later this week at an International Driverless
Cars Conference, running in Adelaide on Thursday and Friday this week.

V2X-Radar uses the IEEE 802.11 compliant wireless signals of current V2X
systems to share sensor information between vehicles and infrastructure.
V2X-Radar is said to use these radio waves to identify objects within its
environment, including non-V2X equipped vehicles.

Cohda claims to be the leading equipment vendor in the V2X market, saying its
hardware and software products are already used in more than 60 percent of all
V2X field trials in the USA, Europe, Australia, Japan, China, and Korea.
