Samsung has today launched an optimised web browser for its Gear VR headset.Samsung states that the Samsung Internet for Gear VR app “allows users to intuitively browse the web and enjoy content in a more immersive atmosphere without having to download content on to their smartphones”.
Internet for VR supports both 360-degree and 3D video streaming, along with any HTML5 video from the web. It provides voice recognition, along with an on-screen keyboard, with Gaze Mode allowing users to select menus by gazing at them.
The app can additionally import bookmarks from the mobile web browser, Samsung Internet for Android, and includes features such as Quick Access, Bookmarks and Tab Manager.
Samsung is currently rolling out the Gear VR, which is compatible with its 2015 flagship smartphones: the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge
Samsung states it is 19 per cent lighter than its previous Gear VR Innovator Edition, and includes new foam cushioning, making it more comfortable to wear, while the touchpad has been improved, providing greater control and easier navigation.
Samsung additionally states that Gear VR users will have access to dozens of new made-for-VR games coming to the Oculus platform this year, and will be able to access content from Samsung Milk VR, Netflix and Oculus Video.
The Samsung Internet for Gear VR beta version will be available for download from the Oculus Store from today.
