Facebook is targeting sports fans with the launch of Facebook Sports Stadium, which it describes as a dedicated place allowing users to experience sports in real time with friends and the world.While Twitter is a recognised venue for real-time conversation for sports, among other topics, Facebook is getting into the action with its new feature, drawing on its vast established user base.
Steve Kafka, Facebook product manager, writes that, with 650 million sports fans, “Facebook is the world’s largest stadium”, with users already turning to the social media platform to share their sports thoughts.
“Now we’ve built a place devoted to sports so you can get the feeling you’re watching the game with your friends even when you aren’t together,” Kafka writes.
“With Facebook Sports Stadium, all the content on Facebook related to the game is in one place, and it comes in real time and appears chronologically.”
Facebook Sports Stadium will comprise: posts from friends and their comments on plays, posts and commentary from experts, such as teams, leagues and journalists, with access to their pages, live scores, stats and a play-by-play, and game info, such as where to find the game on TV.
“You can follow the action as the game unfolds with a live play-by-play, and even like, comment on and share individual plays,” Kafka writes.
“You can also get up to speed quickly with live scores and the most discussed plays. It’s a second-screen experience that we hope makes watching the broadcast even better.”
Facebook is initially rolling out the service for American football games and will support other sports around the world, with the service available on the iPhone in the US and expanding to other platforms in the coming weeks.
