ACCC Approves New Taxi App

Despite initial doubts, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has finally authorised the iHail joint venture by Yellow Cabs, Silver Top Taxi Service, Black and White Cabs, Suburban Taxis and Cabcharge.

The iHail service is the taxi industry’s answer to the rise of Internet based taxi and ride-sharing services like UberX.

The ACCC initially proposed to deny authorisation to the service. But after iHail made a number of “significant modifications” to its app, it has decided to give the service the nod.

The changes include giving passengers a choice to pay their fare in the taxi (rather than just via the app), and the ability to choose a preferred taxi network.

The ACCC has imposed conditions requiring iHail to inform drivers that they remain free to use competing booking apps.
