All Curve: Samsung To Phase Out Flat-Screened Galaxy S?

Samsung could eventually phase out the flat-screened variant of its Galaxy S flagship smartphone series, hinting that it may do so, The Korea Herald has reported.Having recently unveiled its Galaxy Note7 smartphone, sporting a dual-curved screen, it appears Samsung could ramp up its curved-display focus in the future.

“Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone line-up if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen),” The Korea Herald reported Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung’s mobile business, as stating in an interview in New York.

While Samsung’s Galaxy series in recent years has featured flat-screened and edge variants, the Note7’s reception by consumers could help determine Samsung’s future plans for curved-screen displays, beginning with next year’s Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have delivered strong sales for Samsung this year, and it may well be, however, that Samsung looks to maintain the status quo in the short term.

The International Data Corporation recently noted the strong performance of the S7 and S7 edge in the 2016 second quarter, while Samsung, leading the worldwide smartphone market, grew its market share to 22.4 per cent, up from 21.3 per cent year-on-year.

Strategy Analytics recently found that the S7 edge was the world’s top selling Android smartphone in the 2016 first half, shipping an estimated 13.3 million units and accounting for a 2 per cent share of all Android smartphones.

“Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge is currently the world’s most popular Android smartphone,” Neil Mawston, Strategy executive director, commented.

“The S7 edge is wildly popular in dozens of countries globally, due to its attractive curved hardware design blended with a sidebar of apps that consumers find easy to use.”
