Angry English Premier League fans have taken to social media to vent their fury after Optus’ coverage of the opening weekend of the season was besieged by technical problems.While the Premier League has been heavily promoted by the telco, it got off to anything but a smooth start.
Optus had already been the target of criticism since its acquisition of the Premier League rights, with only customers on an eligible Optus plan able to watch the Premier League, with anger boiling over on the weekend.
The hashtag #OptusOut has been trending on Twitter, with social media users vocal in their displeasure.
Fairfax Media has reported an Optus
spokeswoman as stating that the disruption was caused by the Premier
League satellite service and not the Optus network.
“Optus can
confirm that there was a 30 second transmission disruption during the
broadcast of last night’s Premier League match between Bournemouth vs
Manchester United,” Fairfax reported the spokeswoman as stating. “We
have been advised by the Premier League that the disruption was caused
by their satellite distribution supplier.
“The issue was not related to an Optus mobile or fixed broadband network outage, or the Optus Sport app.
“As
soon as Optus became aware of the issue, we switched to an alternative
feed. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused and
appreciate their patience while the broadcast was restored.”
Meanwhile,
judging by the Twitter vitriol, Optus would be looking to do all it can
to iron out technical difficulties and ensure a smooth streaming
service going forward.
