LG Enters Portable GPS Race

The next entrant to the GPS navigation market is LG, with the launch of two ultra-slim portable GPS units at the entry-level end of the price spectrum.

According to LG, its new devices have the edge on competitors as in addition to LCD touch screen operation and detailed map data, the device can provide drivers with specific road names as opposed to the standard ‘turn left’ style directions.

“The GPS industry has been identified as a sustainable and high growth market.  With more than 25 years of experience serving both the OEM (original equipment market) and aftermarket automotive electronics industry around the world, LG Electronics Australia believed that it was time to bring its car navigation expertise directly to Australian consumers for the first time,” said LG’s Darren Goble.

The top end model (LN800) features a 4-inch screen, with a six hour claimed battery life, and auto day/night mode change. The LN500 features a 3.5-inch screen and 4 hour claimed battery life. Both models have 512MB internal memory and SD card slot for memory expansion. They are also both 1.8cm deep which LG says makes them the slimmest design in available in Australia.

“Leveraging insights from its telematics, GPS navigation and in-car Bluetooth communication manufacturing business for some of the world’s largest global automakers, LG believes that its brand awareness and knowledge of the industry will help differentiate itself from competitors,” Goble added.

RRP:
LN500 – $599
LN800 – $699
