Lights, Camera – jOBS!

SAN FRANCISCO – Hollywood cameras are rolling on what some computer enthusiasts think of as a sacred shrine: the garage at 11161 Crist Drive, Los Altos, where in 1976 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are said to have built the world’s first commercial home computer – the Apple 1.
They’re filming scenes for jOBS, a movie that aims to depict how two kids with drive and imagination launched the biggest revolution of our times.

Actor Ashton Kutcher, sporting a scruffy beard and torn jeans, plays the young Jobs, seen rehearsing below with an unnamed actor playing Steve Wozniak.

The famous garage has had a makeover, with its more recent vertical door replaced with sliders, and the blue-green paint covered with 1970s yellow.

A brown Dodge van painted in rainbow colours and with the words “Peace and Love” on the rear doors has been posted outside. Not right, complained Patty Jobs, Steve’s sister, who recalls the era vividly – indeed she helped assemble the first Apple 1s.

Steve Jobs actually drove a VW Kombi – and it was not painted in psychedelic colors, she has insisted.

Oh, yes, and the first 50 Apples (sold for US$500 a piece) weren’t put together in the famed garage at all – that came later – but in a spare bedroom in the house on Crist Drive.
