Super Cool Magnetic Security Camera Revealed By Netgear

Netgear the Company that delivers fast network solutions has delivered a novel new Arlo network security system that is easy to install and looks super cool.

Gone is having to run cable up and around walls or over building frames, all you have to do now is plug in a wire free Netgear Arlo system, the cameras have a battery life of around six months and they can easily be lifted down from the magnetic mount because there are no screws.

Completely wire-free and weatherproofed each camera is powered by four CR123 Lithium batteries. The cameras attach to a cup-and-ball magnetic mounting system that makes it super easy to attach and adjust the camera.

You get a full 360 degrees of movement parallel to plane of the parent surface, with an approximately 120-degree arc in the perpendicular.

The only problem that I see is that while super easy to install a thief could pocket the cameras in seconds.

The $589 kit comes with four mounting bases: You can install them using the provided screws where you might need a camera, then all you do is stick an Arlo on the mount.

Web-based
An Arlo camera isn’t your standard wireless webcam, it needs to be linked with the supplied, upright Wi-Fi base station that attaches to your existing router via an Ethernet cable.

The base station will support up to 15 cameras-if you have the appropriate service plan. The upside is that you get a discrete, dedicated wireless network for cameras that are easy to set; one that offloads battery-draining tasks from the cameras.

All of the video taken by the Arlo system are stored online. You can view them remotely via a free Android and iOS apps or via the Arlo web portal.

The web portal is very nicely done with a clean, attractive, easy-to-navigate user interface. You can force cameras to record video or snap photos, and you can download anything you like to your local device or PC.

You get a free “lifetime” account with your purchase that includes 1GB of storage with 7 days of retention and support for up to five Arlo cameras. But some important features, such as scheduling, and camera sharing with other users, end after your first 30 days.

Setting up the Arlo system is simple.

All you do is attach the base station to your router with the supplied Ethernet cable, press its sync button, and press the sync button on the Arlo cameras.

You can use the apps or the Arlo web portal to step through the setup and account-creation process. It’s a clean and simple.

The Netgear Arlo Smart Home Security Kits start with one camera (VMS3130) available from $349. The kit with two cameras will cost $589, and the Arlo with three cameras costs $799.

Add-on cameras (VMC3030) will cost $249.

There are three tiers of subscription service – Basic (free), Premier and Elite.

The Arlo system comes with an account for five cameras and 10GB of storage. Pay plans that extend that are available for $99 and $149.

The Basic Tier gives you 7 days of cloud storage with 1GB of space, letting you connect up to five cameras on one base station – free of charge.

The Premier Tier costs $12.99 per month or $129 per year, with 30 days of cloud recordings on 10GB of storage, with up to 10 cameras on 1 base station.

The Elite Tier costs $18.99 per month or $189 per year, with 60 days of cloud recordings on 100GB of storage, with up to 15 cameras that you can connect across up to 3 base stations.

Retailers include JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Dick Smith, The Good Guys, Bing Lee and Harvey Norman.
