Apple who last week launched an Australian iTunes site claim that their global Tunes Music Store has sold over one million videos since it debuted on 12 October from a collection of over 2,000 titles priced at $1.99.
“Selling one million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests there is a market for legal video downloads”, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings, so that customers can enjoy watching more videos on their computers and new iPods”.The news shows that Apple’s dominance in the music business is likely to follow through to the movie industry with the same strength. The top selling downloads, priced at $1.99 each, included music videos from Michael Jackson and Fatboy Slim and episodes of “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives.” The videos can be played on the newest version of Apple’s hot-selling iPod, which features a small color screen.
“Selling 1 million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests there is a market for legal video downloads,” said Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs in a statement. “Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings, so that customers can enjoy watching more videos on their computers and new iPods.”
Some analysts have doubted that many people would be comfortable watching lengthy programs on the iPod’s small screen, but that it might prove extremely popular among young consumers watching short music videos and other programs. Jobs said that the company is working to expand the number of videos available for sale. While customers can purchase more than 2 million songs on Apple’s iTunes Music Store website, only about 2,000 TV shows, music videos and other programs are available. The iPod has become a huge source of growth and profits for Apple. The company’s stock today was up more than 4% on the Nasdaq.
