10Mbps New BB Minimum – 50Mbps Soon, Says Ovum

SYDNEY – Ovum has declared that 10Mbps is now “the new minimum” for quality broadband services – the threshold to deliver an acceptable customer experience for general internet applications and Internet/SD video.Further, it says this
will rise to 50Mbps
and above as consumers take up Ultra HD video (aka
4K) and 8K video, which will be even more demanding on the network.

“Analysis of consumer satisfaction with video applications shows that, of
those on a connection below 10Mbps, over 50 percent report a poor
experience,” Ovum said.

“With video becoming ever more widely used (whether short news clips
or You-Tube video or longer TV and film content) the quality of video
experience is becoming central to the overall consumer broadband
experience.”

The findings come from Ovum’s global broadband experience scorecard. Ovum
examined fixed line broadband use by consumers in 30 countries, including
Australia.

Ovum says the survey was specifically designed to examine what applications
consumers actually use and what they think of their broadband experience –
