The Wall Street Journal has said that analysts expect the PS3 price to be lowered by A$147 this year. The claim comes after Sony cut the price of the PS2 in the USA to US$99 and in Europe but not in Australia.
Sony says it has sold a total of more than 136 million units worldwide. It expects to sell 8 million in its fiscal year which ends this month which is nearly as much as its forecast for PS3 sales of 10 million units.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony’s U.S. game unit, told the Wall Street Journal that the PS2 price cut wasn’t directly in response to the recession and was aimed at continuing to drive sales to young families and lapsed game players, who were interested in playing games casually with other family members without making a big investment. PS2 games are typically priced at $29.99, half the price of the more advanced PS3 games.
Videogame publishers have also continued to make new games for the PS2. Mr. Koller said he expects 70 to 80 new titles for the PS2 to come out this year, with another 70 to 80 titles released in 2010.
