Just when you have purchased what a salesperson has told you is the latest and greatest in LCD or plasma TV technology along comes someone like Samsung with new TV technology that makes your latest aquisition look old hat.
Samsung has revealed a 40-inch LCD TV with LED backlighting that the company said generates up to a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.
The display, which was shown at the Society for Information Display (SID) was awarded the SID Gold Award for Display of the Year, is said to have a contrast ratio that is five times higher than LCD sets with more conventional cold cathode fluorescent light (CCFL) backlighting. Samsung said the set also has a color saturation level that is 105 percent of the PAL and NTSC standard.
Samsung has also revealed a 70-inch LCD TV, which it said is “the largest LCD TV panel for mass production.” The large LCD features a proprietary 120Hz McFi (motion-compensated frame interpolation) technology, which refreshes motion picture images at twice the speed of conventional 60Hz models.
Also being shown is what Samsung is calling “the world’s largest color electronic paper.” The e-paper is A4-sized/14.3-inch diagonal flexible plastic that can deliver undistorted color images even when the surface is bent. It also continues to show a static image after power has been shut off.The concept product uses 130-degree Celsius low-temperature amorphous (non-crystalline) silicon processing to prevent distortion of the plastic substrate, Samsung said.
In addition, the company also unveiled a 40-inch black-and-white e-paper product, which is said to be the world’s largest. Samsung said the electrophoretic display (EPD) can be used for creating extra-large digital information displays (DIDs), with HD resolution (1,366 by 768 pixels). The technology consumes a very low power level of 300mW at one frame per minute, which is 1/500 that of a conventional LCD display.
