Corning has announced a new tough glass. Called Willow glass, it maintains Corning’s renowned rigidity, but is lighter, more flexible and cost effective.
The 100 micron thin glass will be used to protect LCD and OLED displays on smartphones, tablets and other gadgets. The glass is thin, flexible and strong enough to be “wrapped” around devices, enabling new device form factors.

Increased glass flexibility has improved its manufacturing process, allowing companies to use high-temperature roll-to-roll technology which, up until now, has been impossible.
“Displays become more pervasive each day and manufacturers strive to make both portable devices and larger displays thinner. Corning Willow Glass provides the substrate performance to maintain device quality in a thin and light form factor,” said Dr. Dipak Chowdhury, division vice president and Willow Glass program director.
“Currently manufacturing in a sheet-to-sheet process, we expect Corning Willow Glass to eventually allow customers to switch to high-throughput, efficient roll-to-roll processing, a long-awaited industry milestone.”
According to GSMArena, existing Corning cliental have received Willow Glass samples, but Corning has remained silent on new products featuring the display technology.
